A new air handling system is being installed in the library. To access the air ducts, the lights and ceiling tiles must be removed from the Children's Room. Hence the Children's Room will be closed until the work is done. The planned completion date is June 1, 2010. Until then, the books from the Children's Room have to moved into various areas of the library. Please scroll down.

The children's Biography section has been moved to the area near the public internet terminals. Meanwhile, the Science Fiction area has been moved to the second story area (mezzanine) at the rear of the library.

The juvenile fiction books have been moved into the area where the teen fiction used to be.

The children's picture books and non-fiction area are right behind the DVD cases.

POETRY READINGS AT THE HANFORD BRANCH LIBRARY

Poetry readings/recitals will be held on Mondays

January 4th, 11th, and 25th

5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

All adults (18 years or older) are welcome to attend and/or share a poem.

This event is free and will be held at the Kings County Library, Hanford Branch, in the meeting room. Meeting room entrance is the white, metal door on the North side (side facing Chase Bank) of the library.

The next library book sale will be on Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.
Come early to get the best titles. Bring a wife, bring a husband, bring your significant other. Bring a friend along to help carry your books for you. Bring a box, bring a bag, bring a basket. There is no limit on how many books you can buy.
The Kings County Library is currently accepting donations for the upcoming book sale. Feel free to bring in your unwanted, unused, unread hardcover and paperback books. Do you have any compact discs, DVDs, videotapes or audiobooks you haven't watched or listened to in years? We will be happy to take them off of your hands. Free up room in your house. Get rid of that clutter.

Effective July 1, 2009, there will be no fees for the following:

Holds (anything requested from another library in the San Joaquin Library System)
Audiobooks (cassette tapes and compact discs)
DVDs
Music CDs
Videotapes
Playaways
Short Loans (formerly known as Rental Books). Checkout time for Short Loans is now two (2) weeks.
There is a check out limit of five (5) items for DVDs, CDs, Videos, Audiobooks, and Playaways.

Due to the current economic situation which is affecting everyone, the Kings County Librarian has decided to do away with the fees pertaining to the items listed above. The .25 cents a day fee still applys to items that are brought back in late.

In celebration of Asian-Pacific Heritage Month

Naomi Hirahara

Hirahara was born in Pasadena by parents who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in WWII. She received a Bachelor's Degree in International Relations at Stanford University. As a reporter and editor of a Japanese-American newspaper, Hirahara wrote about the issues of reparations to Japanese-Americans who were removed from their homes and sent to camps during WWII. In 1966, Hirahara took creative writing in Wichita, Kansas, on a fellowship. She authored two biographies for the Japanese American Museum: An American Son: The Story of George Aratani, Founder of Mikasa and Kenwood; and A Taste For Stawberries: The Independent Journey of Nisei Farmer Manabi Hirasaki. Hirahara turned to writing mysteries featuring curmudgeonly Japanese-American gardener Mas Arai. The books include Summer of the Big Bachi, Gasa-Gasa Girl, and Snakeskin Shamisen, which won the Edgar Allen Poe Award. She is also the author of a middle-grade book, 1001 Cranes...
